If you have ever wanted to begin spray paint art, here's where to look for some of the essentials.
RESPIRATOR
I use the 3M P95 Organic Vapor Reusable Respirator. Before I purchased this I just used any old mask with a seal (there were plenty laying around after 2020). Switching to this respirator is one of the best decisions I have made for spray painting. It’s far more economical than using a new mask every few painting sessions. After a while the filters will turn the color of the paint that I’m using, which is a visual indicator of what would have been in my lungs were I not using the proper mask. Simply replace the filters every so often and continue painting.
DISPOSABLE RESPIRATOR
If you want to start spray painting, but don’t want to commit to a pricier reusable respirator, I suggest using the 3M R95 Odor Respirator for painting with fumes. This is a good option if you need a quick mask for a painting project and don’t see yourself needing a more long-lasting solution.
5” DEWALT PUTTY KNIFE
A putty knife is a great tool for creating galaxy spray paint art. Putty knives are essential for scraping away buildings, bridges, and any other straight structures in your landscape paintings. I personally use a Hyper Tough brand putty knife, but this Dewalt brand knife works just as well. I do not recommend using a cheap brandless knock-off that you may find on Amazon. Yes, these putty knife sets are less expensive, but you will get what you pay for. These putty knives can snap and bend super easily, which is not what you want when trying to paint straight buildings.
2” DEWALT PUTTY KNIFE
The two inch putty knife is another tool in your tool belt for creating galaxy spray paintings. Although you can get by with one knife, it is good to have them in multiple sizes for more complex compositions that require shorter tools. If you are looking to keep things simple, start with the five inch putty knife. If you’re looking to add to your arsenal and expand your skill set, try getting the two inch putty knife as well.
REPLACEMENT SPRAY PAINT CAPS
When using spray paint frequently and in short bursts, the caps are apt to become clogged. Although you can attempt to clean them by soaking them in acetone, some caps are beyond recovery. Replacement caps are essential to galaxy spray painting if you’re going to be making many paintings. This brand of caps works for the Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint & Primer. I like using this brand of paint because it lasts long, works well for galaxy paintings, and is inexpensive.
ZODIAC STENCILS
These are the star sign stencils I use to create my collection of zodiac paintings. I don’t use stencils often, but when I do they work wonderfully for creating sharp and precise patterns that I wouldn’t be able to achieve free handed. You will have to protect the rest of your painting before you spray, and make sure the surface is completely dry before laying anything on your galaxy spray painting.
CIRCLE STENCILS
I use these circle stencils to create galaxy spray paintings on mirrors! Normally when you create spray paint planets, you don’t need stencils (unless you count bowls). When spray painting on a mirror, you don’t want to cover the glass in paint except for the planets. These stencils are the perfect size of most mirrors.
